John the Baptist is a difficult guy for Americans to connect with. To most of us, John seems weird and harsh. His clothes (some matted camel hair and a simple leather belt), the food he ate (bugs!), the place he worked (in the middle of a desert), and his message (“Repent!” aka “You’re wrong!”) make him different than anyone we’ve ever met, certainly different than most preachers we’ve ever heard of. And yet, John is God’s messenger. And God’s message through John is a message of hope.
